I know that this Hourglass Mecca 20 Ambient Lighting Palette ($90) has been out for a while but I was pretty late to the game. Since it is still available at Mecca, I though I might as well do a review because I have been getting a lot of use out of it in the past few weeks and I thought some of you might still be deciding whether to pick it up or not.

This palette was released as part of the limited edition collection for Mecca's 20th Anniversary. I love Mecca and am always happy to support the store since they are easily the best makeup store in Australia. The prices aren't over inflated, the range is awesome, and I literally always get good service when I am in there. I'm not at all affiliated with Mecca (besides maybe having a few friends that work there) and I'm not on their PR list - I really do love the store. So of course, I had to get something from the anniversary collection.

Along with just about everyone else, the Hourglass palettes always catch my eye and it was easily the thing I was most drawn to out of all of the anniversary palettes. What I think I like most is it is a full powder look in a single palette: you get a bronzer, blush and highlighter. Not to mention, I think the shades are really universally flattering and would suit anyone with a light to medium skin tone.Within the palette you get:

  • Ambient Lighting Powder in Luminous Light
  • Ambient Lighting Blush in Mecca Birthday Glow (palette exclusive)
  • Ambient Lighting Bronzer in Luminous Bronze Light
So basically this palette offers everything. The Ambient Lighting Powder is luminous powder that you can also layer up to be a highlighter. I also use it swept over the eyelids. The bronzer can also perform a double purpose because I use it to contour my crease and create a natural shadow look. I also love that this palette is so great for travel because it has everything you need in a single compact palette.

As for quality, all of these powders are very good and live up to what we have all come to expect from Hourglass. I will say that the Ambient Lighting Powder seems to have slightly chunkier glitter particles than my original Ambient Lighting Powder Palette ($90) does. That said, it still looks really nice on the skin. The bronzer is beautiful and blends like dream, which is a relief because that is the main reason I bought this palette. The blush is also the same amazing quality as all the other Ambient Blushes and blends as easily as you could ever ask a blush to. The longevity is also very good and it easily lasts throughout the day.

I also wanted to break down the value of these palettes because I feel like most of us gravitate towards palettes of products that are also sold as singles to get more bang for your buck. Lets break down the numbers:
  • Ambient Lighting Powders retail for $67 for 10 grams for a value of $6.70/gram. You get 2.8 grams in each palette pan so that is an included value of $18.76
  • Ambient Lighting Blushes retail for $55 for 4.2 grams for a value of $13.10/gram. That means the 2.8 gram pan is worth $36.68
  • Ambient Lighting Bronzers retail for $72 for 11 grams for a value of $6.55. That means the 2.8 gram pan is worth $18.34
That means you get an included value of $73.79 for the $90 price tag. This isn't particularly amazing value, but it is worth noting that you get to try three different iconic products in smaller pans and the blush is an exclusive shade. To buy a powder, blush and bronzer separately would set you back $194!

Finally, the swatches! I think all the shades are the perfect level of pigmentation that gives you the colour you are looking for while being very easy to work with. For the reference, I am naturally incredibly pale and I can wear all of these shades even when I'm not fake tanning.

There you have my full review. Long story short, I think this is a lovely palette, especially for those who want to try multiple formulas of the Hourglass powders. I had never tried the bronzer before so it was the bronzer and the exclusive blush shade that sold me on this palette. Let me know if you will or will not be picking this one up, or maybe if you already have. I would love

Disclaimer: I paid for this product myself. As always, my opinions are my own.

  2. Yes, I bought this too and love it! To be honest I bought a single of this bronzer when it first came out and sold it about a year ago because I felt like it was too orangey on me. I’m getting better st bronzer in general - I just feel like my face doesn’t suit it a lot of the time! I really wanted luminous light, and the blush so it works out when for me :)
