Declutter Series: Single Shadows

declutter series single eyeshadows eye shadow
Lately I have realised just how much of my makeup collection I really don’t use on a regular, or even irregular, basis. There are so many things that I haven’t even used since I first got them; I might use them once or twice at first and then I quickly lose them in the depths of my collection. In light of that, I have decided to embark on a massive declutter series of my entire collection, inspired by Maddie’s Beauty Spot and her recent similar series.

My hopes for this series is that I will be able to sell and giveaway makeup so someone else can enjoy it, rather than it just sitting in my collection and going bad. I really want to reduce the wastage because it just seems so senseless. Also, I want to generally just downsize my collection. I’ve reached a point where I am over collecting for the sake of collecting. It is expensive, wasteful and just wastes space. I’d rather spend my money on a few really excellent products than have a million cheaper things I don’t use. Finally, I hope that by going through every single thing in my collection, I can isolate some of my bad buying habits so I can actively prevent them in a future and spend my money more wisely.

I decided to start with my single shadows because I figured that would be a manageable one. I had this idea in my head that because I don’t really use single shadows all that much, I didn’t really have many of them. Yeah… I was wrong. Here are the 34 single shadows that I located in my collection.

declutter series single eyeshadows eye shadow keeping
I decided to 16 of the 34 shadow which I think is really respectable. I either use these on a regular basis or really do like the shades which fit with my overall makeup style. There are a couple like the Colourpop and L'Oreal shadows which I still might get rid of but I want to give them more of a chance first. I hope that since my collection is a bit less cluttered I will use what I do have more becuase I can acutally see it and it isn't buried in a mountain of stuff that I don't. I will revisit those items in a few months and maybe still get rid of them if I don't use them.

Throwing Away

I decided that five of my shadows were well past their used by date which isn't too bad. Some of my other cream shadows are technically out of the 6-12 month recommended best before period but at the end of the day, they really haven't been used much and still look and feel fine. That is the usual rule of thumb I use: if it looks, smells or feels weird or in any way different to when I bought it, I chuck it. I usually turn over eye items like liners and mascaras a lot quicker too.

Selling or Giving Away

I will be selling and giving away 13 of the 34. Many of these should be easy to sell and get a little bit of money back on, especially the Colourpop and Kiko shadows. As for the drugstore ones, I will probably just give them away because they really aren't worth anything but I want do declutter them nonetheless.

So in the end I got rid of more than half of my single shadow collection so I’m really proud of myself. Overall, I learned a few things from going through this little section of my collection:
  • Stop trying to branch out – I buy unusual shadows and then never use them. I am a neutrals girl and I have accepted it.
  • Decide early when products don’t suit you or you simply don’t like them so you can sell them while they are still fresh and get some money back on them.
  • Don’t keep duplicates – A girl only needs so many base cream coloured eye shadows, especially when the Tom Ford shade wins by a mile.

I hope you enjoyed this first part of my little declutter series. I am really happy with how much I have moved on since it will now all fit comfortably in my storage. I kept things brief considering there were 34 products but if you want to know exactly why I kept and got rid of each product, let me know and I can make the next part more detailed. What section of my collection would you like me to declutter next? Lipsticks? Blushes? Makeup Brushes? Some of them a daunting task indeed but I will tackle it if you want to see them! Let me know in the comments and feel free to join along with my declutter series to get on top of your own collection too.

  1. I always watch decluterrings on YouTube - it makes me feel so cleansed haha and gets me inspired to do my own cleaning.

    1. Me too! After watching Maddie's series I had to do it myself. Let me know how your clean out goes :)

  2. This is the exact reason why I have very little single eyeshadows! There are soo many great ones - But then again, I do have quite a lot of palettes. Have you thought of checking out depop to resell some of your makeup bits, I've sold and bought quite a few things there makeup and clothes, I really recommend it. :)

  5. I love a good de-clutter! Actually did my single shadows recently too - probably wasn't harsh enough mind you. Looking at how many you got rid of I suddenly feel guilty ;)

    1. Hey progress is progress. This is the most ruthless I have ever been in my clean outs because I think I have simplified my makeup a lot recently. Definitely don't feel guilty:)
