I was a big fan of the Rimmel The Only One lipsticks when they were originally released (reviewed here) so I was really keen to try out the new matte collection. Honestly, I haven't been able to get on board with the whole matte liquid lipstick trend because I hate how dry they look and how they parch my already dry lips. These are welcome reprieve though because, while they are matte, they are a much more comfortable formula to wear.
The new collection of mattes consists of 9 shades that are actually really nice. I love and will regularly wear 6 of the 9 which is good for me considering I'm not that adventurous with lip colour on a daily basis. The packaging and bullet shape is the same as the other The Only One lipsticks and, while I prefer a tapered bullet for more precise application, the flat rounded bullet gets the job done for the lighter shades but you will need a lip brush for the more intense ones.
Okay so let's go through the shades:
The new collection of mattes consists of 9 shades that are actually really nice. I love and will regularly wear 6 of the 9 which is good for me considering I'm not that adventurous with lip colour on a daily basis. The packaging and bullet shape is the same as the other The Only One lipsticks and, while I prefer a tapered bullet for more precise application, the flat rounded bullet gets the job done for the lighter shades but you will need a lip brush for the more intense ones.
Okay so let's go through the shades:
- 110 Leader of the Pink: a bright, cool neon pink
- 120 Call The Shots: a bright watermelon pink
- 200 Salute: a mauve-pink nude
- 500 Take The Stage: a bright blue toned red
- 610 High Flyer: a dusty rose nude
- 700 Trendsetter: a true beige nude
- 750 Look Who's Talking: a light chocolate brown nude
- 800 Run the Show: a bright neon purple
- 810 The Matte Factor: a deep wine red
As for application, I found them all lovely with perhaps the exception of 750 and 800 which were a tiny bit patchier and harder to apply. They have a velvet texture on the lips, much the same way as a pore filling silicone primer like Benefit Porefessional feels on the skin. The coverage was quite smooth too but there was a tiny bit of that seperation you can get with lipsticks but to be fair, it is quite minimal and the only matte lipstick I have found that doesn't do it are the Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Creme Lipsticks ($43). As for longevity, they lasted a good couple of hours but wore off after eating and drinking which I don't mind because they are actually comfortable. If you want a truly long wear matte lip colour, it probably isn't going to feel very good on the lips.
As you can see from the lip swatches, the all apply quite smoothly and they have a beautiful finish. I really really liked these and will definitely be getting more wear out of them. Will you be running out to pick up some of the these shades? Which are your favourite? Let me know in the comments below.

Aw thanks so much. I don't know if I can quite pull off Look Who's Talking Now and Run the Show but it is sweet of you to say so. I definitely agree that smell can be off putting though. I don't mind the scent of these but I really can't deal with the Kate lipstick smell. Thanks for reading :)
