My New Love: Smith & Cult Nail Lacquers

Sunday, 14 February 2016
Can we just take a minute to appreciate these stunning bottles. They are hands down my favourite nail polishes to look at. I usually keep my nail polishes in stacked boxes in a cupboard but these are far too beautiful to ever be hidden away. Smith & Cult is the brain child of Dineh Mohajer, who is also the founder of Hard Candy. She designed this range to be the perfect duality of class and sass; Smith = good girl, Cult = bad girl. The colour range is also stunning and filled with some really unique and eye catching shades which is really saying something in a world with millions of nail polishes.

Every polish in this range is 5 free which means they are free of dibutyl, phthalate, toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde Resin and camphor. All have these harsh chemicals have been linked to serious health and environmental effects.

Smith & Cult Nail Lacquer in Bitter Buddhist $28
The crowd was a mixture of teenagers attempting to solve their problems (before they actually have any) and middle aged people, mostly women, with a desperate look of "save me" on their faces - it was depressing.
Each nail polish comes with a cute little anecdote to help bring it to life. This shade in particular was inspired by all the health nuts and yogis the creator met in Southern California. It is a gorgeous muted mint green kind of a colour but with a slightly mossier undertone (if that makes sense). I'm such a sucker for mint green polishes but this one is so unique from anything in my collection. It applies beautifully and was totally opaque in two coats and I didn't get any bubbling which is something that I have been having so much trouble with from other nail polish brands.

My manicure lasted about 5 days which is incredible for me. So many times I whacked my nails and thought for sure I'd chipped my polish but it held up like a champ! It didn't even chip when I was frantically picking at my screen protector when I thought I cracked my iPhone screen - we're safe, it was just my protector! This polish isn't going to give you a miracle long lasting manicure but they are top quality and will perform better than most of the competition

Smith & Cult Nail Lacquer in Kundalini Hustle $28
Went to a bar downtown last night called The Closet for my friend's coming out party... at first glance, there was bad news everywhere.
This shade is described as an opaque poppy red which I think is an apt description. It is one of those bright true reds that really pops. Also, I don't know if I have suddenly become way better at applying polish (I doubt it) but I think the shorter polish brush really helps with precision application on super bold colours like this. Either way, they are great brushes and I was able to get a more precise application than normal! The colour payoff of this shade is impressive and it was almost a one-coater and completely opaque in two. Again I got zero bubbling which makes me so indescribably happy. Can you tell yet that I am in LOVE with these polishes?

Smith & Cult Nail Lacquer Base Coat in Basis of Everything $28
Without this, you've got no foundation.
This one applies really nicely and dries almost instantly. I gives me a nice smooth base and it helped to make my manicures last a good 4-5 days which for me, is really impressive. The slight pink tint is also invisible on the nails and I actually think they just added it so you can easily tell the difference between the base and the top coat which is a little detail that I really appreciate.

Smith & Cult Nail Lacquer Top Coat in Above it All $28

Extremely glossy protective seal. Das it.
This top coat really delivers a super glossy finish. It is also a really nice consistency without running too thick like so many of them do. My manicures with the Smith & Cult base coat, polish and top coat lasted 5 days so they whole combo together really helps to prevent chipping. As an odd side note, you can't really use this as a glossy coat by itself on your natural nails because it just wont stick to the natural nail bed and started peeling off in large chunks in less than 24 hours but lasted perfectly when I used it over polish.

Basically I am a little bit obsessed with these nail polishes and I will definitely be picking up more shades in the very new future starting with these absolutely stunning shades.
These are the kind of beautiful polishes that, if I was rich, I would have every shade displayed as a work of art on their own custom shelves. If you are wanting to purchase some for yourself, unfortunately there is not yet an Australian online store but they are available in salons all over the country., To find your closest stockist just contact Rogue Beauty by calling 1300 725 122 or email at info@roguebeauty.com.au.

Stay Rosy.

  2. I love how she's added little notes to each polish, very unique! I think that mint one is gorgeous and you're right! As a fellow connoisseur of mint nail polish, it's looks to be very different from others I've seen or collected.

    1. Me too! Some of them are so entertaining. Considering your blog handle, I will bow to you as the supreme mint polish connoisseur ;) It is definitely unique. I think the shade is somewhere in between Essie Mint Candy Apple and Who's The Boss. I own both of these and I think I like Bitter Buddhist more.

    1. Yeah if you live in a major city it is definitely worth emailing and asking. I found out that there is a stockist not far from me at all though it would be worth driving for those gorgeous bottles.
