The Importance of SPF

Friday, 20 November 2015
SPF is simply the sun protection factor of a sunscreen. Sun damage is the biggest cause of aging and causes far more wrinkles down the track than skipping your night moisturiser. Even more importantly, most of this damage doesn't occur at the beach or other long days you spend out in the sun but instead because of the sun exposure you get everyday simply walking to the bus, having your lunch outside or going for a quick jog. The sun causes a lot of damage to your skin, not to mention heightens your risk of dangerous skin cancers. These things are all easily preventable so a daily sunscreen hands down the most important skincare step a lot of you are probably skipping.

The SPF number on a product relates to how much longer you can stay out in the sun before burning. Naturally your skin can stand about 10 minutes in the sun before it starts burning. If you apply a SPF 15 sunscreen, it ups your skins ability to withstand burning by 150 minutes. SPF 30 ups your protection by 300 mins, SPF 50 raises it even higher to 500 minutes and you get the idea! While SPF 15 does offer good protection, it really is recommended that you use a SPF 30-50 for everyday, applied in the morning. Also, it is really important to use a sunscreen that offers UVA and UVB protection. They just relate to the different wave lengths of UV rays but what you need to know is that UVA is what causes premature aging and UVB is what actually burns your skin and results in sunburn, peeling and all those nasty things. It is really important of course that you are protected from both.

I will be the first to admit that in the past I haven't liked wearing sunscreen everyday. I know! Bad me! I have the worlds palest skin which freckles up so fast and burns at the slightest hint of sun. Many of the sunscreens I have tried, even the ones for face, have just been greasy, oily and smelled funny. I have even tried high end ones and still really disliked them but good news! I have found my new, hands down favourite sunscreen that I am happy to apply everyday and the best part? It super cheap!

The new Ego Sunsense Moisturising Face Lotion (100mL for $14.49) is SPF 50+, protects from both UVA and UVB while simultaneously being oil-free and non-comedogenic (won't clog your pores). All of that is fairly standard for a decent sunscreen but what I love most about this is the thin, easily absorbed lotion formula and almost complete lack of a smell. It doesn't even leave me looking super shiny like most sunscreens. I want to take this moment to let you know that this isn't a sponsored post. I did receive this sunscreen in a goody bag (with no obligation to say nice things about it) but you can bet that as soon as I run out of it I will be getting another bottle... and another... and another. SPF is really important to me so I am just really happy I have found a sunscreen I actually like using. The formula even includes moisturisers which means those more time strapped ladies can actually use this as a two for one but I myself still like applying my day cream, then my sunscreen.

I know sun protection isn't necessarily a sexy topic but it is so important, especially in places like Queensland, Australia (where I live) which has one of the highest UV indexes in the world. If you want to effectively and inexpensively prevent premature aging and sun damage, start using a sunscreen everyday now. Will you be adding a sunscreen like this one to your daily routine? Do you already use a great everyday sunscreen? Let me know in the comments below.

Stay Rosy.
