Drugstore Powders for Fair Skin

Tuesday, 16 June 2015
If you are anything but a medium skin tone it can be exceptionally hard to find good drugstore face products, whether they be foundations, concealers, or powders. With high end brands that generally have a much bigger colour range like MAC, Nars, etc it is easier but if you are on a budget it can be really hard! As someone who has always had trouble finding products pale enough, especially at a lower price point, I thought I would share some of the best drugstore powders I have found. I have yet to find any good drugstore foundations or concealers to suit my fair skin but we can't have everything!
One thing I always notice with a lot of paler drugstore face products is that they tend to run really pink (Revlon, I'm looking at you!). Now that is fine if you have that sort of undertone but for all of us with a neutral to yellow undertone, it can be tough. Anytime I find products with the yellower undertone I need they are always too dark but these two powders are thankfully are an exception.
Left to right: Australis Fresh & Flawless Pressed Powder in Light Beige and Bourjois Healthy Balance Unifying Powder in 52 Vanille.
Left to right: Australis Light Beige and Bourjois 52 Vanille. I included this one because the slight difference in undertones seems to show up better against skin.
As you can see from the pictures above these are both very light and are fairly neutral in their undertones. The Australis one is only a touch lighter and yellower but both look great on my pale skin.

Bourjois Healthy Balance Unifying Powder in 52 Vanille $20
As you can tell by the fact I have hit some serious pan, I really love this powder!. It was the first one I found (other than translucent powders) that really fit my skin tone and I have been using it religiously ever since. I would categorise it as a light to medium coverage but it is also worth nothing that this powder is so finely milled it seriously feels like silk! I seriously could not be more impressed by this $20 powder! It has the luxury feel of a far more expensive product and I also really love the solid compact packaging.

Australis Fresh & Flawless Pressed Powder in Light Beige $11.95
For the longest time I heard people raving about this full coverage powder but I just had to pout from sidelines because the previously lightest shade, Natural, was way too dark for me. In a seemingly unprecedented and hopefully trendsetting move, Australis has actually listened to their fairer (and darker!) customers and doubled their colour range with three new shades! When I first heard this I didn't hold much hope because even when drugstore ranges have a large colour spectrum, I'm often still too pale. I could not be more happy to be wrong! This is actually now one of the lightest powders available in the drugstore brands and it is the same amazing formula that has made Fresh & Flawless a cult classic. I bought one to try but I already plan to pick up another to keep in my handbag at all times!

I managed to get this from my local Big W which seems to have gotten stocked up even before Priceline which doesn't seem to have it in stock in-store or online yet but I have been told it is coming very soon. Alternatively you can order it from the Australis website which I have linked above. Also, if you are a student it is good to know that the Australis website offers 25% off for students through Unidays.

So there you have my review of the best powders for us paler ladies. Even though I am head over heels in love with my new Australis Fresh & Flawless I will still also use my Bourjois powder when I want a lighter coverage just to set my foundation. In any case, you really can't go wrong with either of these powders. They are both amazing value and quality.

Stay Rosy.

    1. You do know they just expanded the range by double to 6 shades all up? This shade is a new one. I was in the same boat as you but you should definitely check again with the new shades.
