Review: Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel Universal Bronzing Base

Wednesday, 11 February 2015
This has been popping up on blogs and Instagram with increasing frequency lately so I couldn't resist picking it up even though I was a bit worried how it would pan out on my pale skin. For this reason, and because most reviewers of this product have a much darker skin tone, I figured it might be good for me to review this product, especially for my fellow pale ladies. After all, it is a pretty big investment so you want to be sure, right?
For some weird reason I thought this was a lot more expensive that it actually is which is why I never considered buying it before. While I certainly wouldn't consider $67 cheap, considering the huge 30g tub and the fact that you need the tiniest bit per application I would say it is a decent investment. Especially considering that their aren't a lot of good cream bronzing formulas out there, especially one this lovely and flattering.

The jar is very simple but somehow at the same time, so very luxe. It is a simple clear plastic base with the typical black lid emblazoned with the beautiful gold Chanel logo. I'm always a sucker for nice packaging and I will say it looks gorgeous sitting among my makeup collection. Aside from being beautifully simple, the packaging is very effective and ensures you can screw up with lid tight so it doesn't dry out.

I know a lot of people use this over their foundation but I prefer to use it as Chanel intended, as a makeup base. I apply this after my primer in the typical contour areas with my new Sigma F55 Small Duo Fibre brush I bough especially for applying it. Any small duo fibre brush would do though and I used my Real Techniques Stippling Brush before my Sigma brush arrived. I apply it in quite a noticeable looking stripe which looks a bit scary and orange but fear not, it blends beautifully when foundation is applied over the top. If I want a slightly more intense bronze, I sometimes add a tiny bit over my foundation too.

Finish and Longevity
What I like most about this bronzer is it is so warm toned, which is ironically what scared me most about buying it. Compared to my other bronzers it is positively orange when swatched but when blended it is a beautiful true bronze. It warms my face up more than any of my other bronzers that I use for contouring (Nars Laguna and Benefit Hoola) while still keeping things light and very natural because of the cream formula. If I want a very contoured look I will still apply a cooler toned bronzer under my cheek bones but it is very wearable by itself and gives a nice natural contour which unfortunately cannot be completely captured on camera as much as I did try.
Natural Finish!
Defined contouring while still looking very subtle.
So far as longevity, on my normal to dry skin it lasts very well throughout the day even in fairly horrible heat. I could imagine that you might have a bit of issues keeping it on oilier skin but the same can be said for any makeup, particularly cream formulas. All in all though, it lasts very well.

The Bottom Line

Despite having my reservations and being worried about this bronzer pulling orange on my pale skin I really like it. I wouldn't say it is an absolute must have because I was getting on very well with my Nars Laguna or Benefit Hoola but I love this very natural cream finish that looks like a very natural tan. Also thanks to the warm colour it is virtually impossible to make this bronzer look muddy though improper application and blending might leave you with some fairly orange racing stripes.

Basically I am super happy with this bronzer and feel it was a good investment. Plus it is so nice to have my first luxe Chanel product! I think I see a Chanel blush on the horizon too. They are just so lovely. I would love to know if you have tried this Chanel bronzer or which other bronzers you have been loving so let me know in the comments below.

Stay Rosy.
